Hochschule für Künste Bremen – AaIP

Artists as Independent Publishers (AaIP) was an interdisciplinary artist book workshop organised by Prof Katrin von Maltzahn, Prof Stephan Baumkötter, Marion Bösen and Prof Tania Prill. It was held from 11–29 November 2019 at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen.

The project was done in cooperation with five other international art academies: Geidai Tokyo, University of Applied Arts Vienna, the Royal College of Art, London, St Lucas School of Arts Antwerp and Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle.

We were invited to introduce the students to possibility of creating art books with the Office Offset machine.

The mix of participants across departments, including fine arts, photography and graphic design, created an exciting challenge when it came to implementing publication ideas.

A little confusing, but all the more helpful: calculating of the required amount of paper.

One student wanted to print CMYK separated photos on the maximum print area – a challenge we happily accepted. In the end we only printed cyan, magenta and yellow (scrapping the black plate) because we all were quite intrigued by the look of the images without the black colour separation.

Never gets old – the fascinating mixing behaviour of transparent offset inks.

At the end of the workshop all students presented their art books. It was such a pleasure to see how unique and diverse the results turned out.
